Playford Local History
Welcome to the vibrant city of Playford, located in the northern suburbs of Adelaide in South Australia. Playford is a young city, formed in 1997 as a result of the amalgamation of the Elizabeth and Munno Para council areas. Despite its youth, Playford has a rich history, dating back thousands of years.
Pre-Contact History
The traditional owners of the land on which Playford now stands are the Kaurna people. The Kaurna people lived in the area for thousands of years before the arrival of European settlers. Archaeologists have found evidence of Kaurna occupation of the area dating back at least 5,000 years. The Kaurna people had a close connection to the land and the environment, and their way of life was sustained by fishing, hunting, and gathering.
The Arrival of European Settlers
The first European explorers arrived in South Australia in the 1830s. The area that is now Playford was initially used for grazing and agriculture. The town of Elizabeth was established in 1955, named after Queen Elizabeth II, and Munno Para followed shortly after. By the 1970s, the area had begun to experience significant growth, with the establishment of new industries and the arrival of migrants from all over the world.
Growth and Diversification
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the Elizabeth and Munno Para council areas continued to grow and diversify. The city became a hub for manufacturing and industry, with a significant proportion of the population employed in these sectors. Playford also became home to a vibrant and diverse community, with people from many different backgrounds and cultures.
The Formation of Playford
In 1997, the Elizabeth and Munno Para council areas were amalgamated to form the City of Playford. The new city encompassed a large area and was home to over 70,000 people. The formation of Playford was intended to promote better coordination and planning in the region, and to provide better services and facilities for the community.
